Each member of Noctis' party can be equipped with a special powerful and unique ability called a technique. As party members attack and defend, the tech bar fills. Once the bar is sufficiently full, the technique can be unleashed by holding L1/LB and pressing the appropriate D-Pad direction: up for Ignis, left for Prompto, right for Gladiolus, and down for guest party members. This depletes the bar, and it needs to be refilled again before it can be used. A successful technique creates and opening for Noctis. Press O/B when prompted to follow up with another attack. Techniques level up and become more powerful with use.

Unlocking techniques[]

Techniques are unlocked with Ability Points (AP) through the Ascension menu. Each party member has one technique unlocked by default. They are assigned by going to the Equipment menu and selecting "Technique."
