Each member of the party has a unique skill. Character skill progression can be viewed in the level up screen when resting at camps or lodgings. Skills are leveled up by earning hidden experience points (skill points or SP) that are granted when completing skill-related tasks: catching fish in the fishing minigame will increase Noctis' Fishing skill; Gladiolus' Survival skill will passively level up as the player traverses the over world on foot; preparing meals at camp will increase Ignis' Cooking skill; Prompto's Photography skill will passively level up when he takes pictures throughout the game. All skills max out at level 10, and each level up confers its own benefits.

Increasing Prompto's photography level greatly enhances the speed at which it can be maxed out at level 10. Encouraging Prompto to take more photos (by using his Snapshot technique in battle or equipping him with an item such as the Camera Strap) will also make leveling-up easier. Joining him on tours and completing Photo Op sidequests are also a great way of getting quick SP, as these quest-related photos are worth more SP than other photos.
